The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill created the Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice (OIPEP) to help position the University at the forefront of a nation-wide movement to transform the way students are trained for the workforce and care for our communities. Recognizing a need for an official presence that would transform interprofessional education beyond a component of accreditation to a cornerstone of the Carolina Experience, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Bob Blouin, PharmD, established our office to reflect a campus-wide initiative, and allow for IPE to become a core component of the University’s learning environment. Our office will create a shared language and mindset around interprofessional education and practice that can help advance the quadruple aim of healthcare: improving the patient experience; improving population health; reducing costs; and attaining joy in work.

With a structure that supports the intentional integration of IPEP across the learning continuum, graduates will leave the University ready to lead teams and work together to find solutions for the biggest challenges in healthcare. OIPEP is a partnership between the schools of Business, Dentistry, Education, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work; the department of Allied Health; and the Health Sciences Library. Building on this collaborative powerhouse of institutions with rich traditions of excellence, UNC-CH is uniquely positioned to transform health and human systems by preparing professionals from different disciplines to work better together.
